The drive was long and there were many sections of the freeway that were limited to 80kph, making the trip even longer! Nevertheless, the students arrived ready and raring to go.
Straight away the students got into the adventuring spirit with some great first-day activities. The students tried their hand at climbing a high rock wall in a harness and feeling their way through the pitch blackness of the cave maze. Declan and Annylee helped each other through as a team, which was great.
On Tuesday night, the students participated in a Trivia Night competition which was very competitive. It was so competitive that every student won at least something on the night. The sport questions were hotly debated! Jarayne was very keen to see who won – mostly because he really wanted the prizes.
Wednesday was another action-filled bonanza. The students tried the sky bridge. Tom was a standout on the Skybridge, doing his best to stay focused. Mr Redmond fell of the sky bridge. Mr Lobley told Mr Redmond he could no longer try any risky activities due to OH&S regulations.
There was a scavenger hunt and a water-based challenge called ‘Snowy’, the terror of the highwire and the crazy challenge of the Summit window, where students literally hang out in thin air 15 metres above the ground. Ollie and Tom were great at overcoming their fears on this one. Then there was the laser tag.
Mr Lobley and Mr Redmond had a great firefight, but Mr Lobley took out the English commando with some well-placed headshots. Mr Redmond got his revenge by telling Addi where Mr Lobley was and Addi took Mr Lobley out with some very accurate shooting. Other notable laser warriors were Austin, Chad, Max, Lucy, Ollie and Hamish.
On Wednesday evening, the students put together a talent show. Working together, they came up with a range of acts, including dancing, a sketch act called “Roberto with Booty” and stand-up-comedy. Participants included Mara, Lucy, Mahlie, Ashley, Tahyah, Bailey, Chad, Austin, Ollie, Addi, Austin, Jarayne and Tom.
The students didn’t quite understand why Mr Redmond was being mean to them, as they didn’t really know who this “Simon Cowell” character was. Luckily Michelle played the role of ‘nice judge’! There were a lot of great acts, but the night was taken out in the end by Tahyah and her incredible dancing skills. Bailey was the most worn out on the second night, looking to get to sleep as soon as possible!
The following day was the big one. After more laser tag, high climbing and inflatable obstacle courses, the campers tackled the infamous Monster Course. Only past Summit campers would understand just how intense the Monster Course is. There’s water, mud, ropes, mud, tyres, games, mud and more mud. Working together (Austin and Finn even led a rescue mission to save Mara!) they beat the course and learned a lot about helping each other.
After movie night and a good sleep, the students all braved the bush course, where JJ showed great teamwork skills and the amazing giant swing before embarking on the long journey home. The students were a little disappointed by the lack of a McDonald’s stop but the staff were happy with the travel time to get home. A great week was had by all!
